2011 was a banner year for the cloud. We saw significant growth in adoption, a plethora of new services and increased focus from both the enterprise and government – this despite a tumultuous global economy.

2011 saw tremendous growth in the cloud. For providers and customers alike, cloud is the new frontier of IT, and although we may struggle to efficiently manage and secure it, there’s no doubt that it’s revolutionizing the architecture of today’s enterprise. As we look ahead to 2012, cloud adoption will rise significantly as innovators deliver countless new services and the enterprise migrates core infrastructure. As they do, here are a few security-related predictions that should be considered for the next year.

A new study “Cloud Security: Managing Firewall Risks” conducted by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by Dome9 Security, has been conducted to determine the challenges organizations face when managing access and securing firewalls and ports in cloud environments.

Cloud hosting vendor Rackspace has agreed to offer customers Dome9 Security’s firewall management technology. The deal aligns Tel Aviv, Israel-based Dome9 with the second largest provider of cloud infrastructure behind Amazon (NSDQ:AMZN) Web Services. The security vendor’s products will be available through Rackspace’s Cloud Tools Program, which is how the cloud vendor offers third-party applications to its customers.

The question of cloud security has been debated ever since the Cloud emerged as a new force promising to shake the world of IT. Even though the attention grabbing benefits that cloud computing entails for the business drove the transition to the cloud for many early adopters, organizations and individuals are still continuously being warned about potential cloud security issues that are influencing the pace in which the widespread adoption is occurring.

Computing via the Internet cloud — like renting servers in a far-off data center from Amazon or Rackspace — can save companies money and keep them flexible. But it can be a security challenge. Companies are still trying to figure out how to best protect their leased cloud computing systems from attacks, beyond the security measures such services provide.

While organizations continue to embrace cloud-computing platforms, surveys find organizations are concerned about security and their very ability to manage it in the cloud.

Organizations with any sort of data center face the challenge of managing and securing access to numerous servers in both local and distributed environments. Now as companies move to virtualized environments and cloud computing, the same security and device management issues are growing exponentially.

Dome9 Security, a leading provider of security management for public and private clouds, and the Ponemon Institute announced the results of its cloud security study that assessed the obstacles faced by IT departments with firewall and port security in cloud environments.

67 percent of IT security respondents in a Ponemon Institute study, report that their organization is very vulnerable or vulnerable because cloud ports and firewalls are not adequately secured. Furthermore, 54 percent of respondents said their organizations’ IT personnel are not knowledgeable or have no knowledge about the potential risk of open firewall ports in their cloud environments.

There are obviously a lot of concerns when it comes to the security of cloud computing services, but not too many folks have been all that specific about what their concerns really are. To find out, the folks at The Ponemon Institute surveyed 682 IT professionals on behalf of Dome9 Security, a provider of a firewall management service, to determine what specific security issues were delaying or preventing their adoption of public cloud computing services.

Research from the Ponemon Institute has revealed the problems thrown up by cloud automation. Nearly 20 percent of organisations have already suffered a security breach or malware exploit thanks to insecurity at their cloud provider.

A recent report made by Dome9 Security and Ponemon Institute shows that the IT staff of most companies considers their cloud severs as being vulnerable. According to the study called “Cloud Security: Managing Firewall Risks,” it seems as the biggest fears lie in the lack of adequately secured cloud ports and firewalls, 67% of the respondents believing these to be crucial aspects in the protection of such systems.

For Omar Caban, the attacks on his company’s virtualized Web servers were relentless. Every day, the servers were hit by more than 50 attacks, most of them traced to IP addresses in China. The attackers would try to break the system password and gain root access, said Caban, president and CEO at Best Growth Stock LLC, which provides investors with the latest stock market information, news and investment analysis.
